The characteristic of Baroque is that every detail is elaborated in detail.
Baroque is abundance in which every facet has its own identity.
This is the way I have built up this painting.
I have sought the tension between the various approaches and the working methods offered by the materials. The materials I have used in this painting are from a wide variety of periods. The fragment that goes back farthest into the past is one from a painting made in 1813.
The painting lives in both the past and the present.
The character of the “discoverer” has also been drawn from a variety of periods, approached in the form of things such as arrogance, gracefulness, pride, shyness, naivety, intelligence. That you have all of this in you is also a form of Baroque.
It must have been exhilarating to discover a unique animal species, the excitement and the amazement and the fact of adding something to life that was already there but had never been seen.
This painting proved for me to be a voyage of discovery into the way in which I have approached light. There too I made use of Baroque.
I enjoy every single detail in this work. And the fact that all these details together show a discoverer brings me back to the life of now, which you could also consider a type of Baroque if you look at life around you.
“Het kenmerk van barok is dat elk detail in detail is uitgewerkt. Barok is een veelheid waarbij elk facet zijn eigen eigenheid heeft. Op die manier heb ik dit schilderij opgebouwd.
Ik heb gezocht naar het spanningsveld van de verschillende benaderingen en werkwijzen die de materialen bieden. In de materialen die ik in het schilderij heb gebruikt, zit ook een veelheid aan periodes. Het verst terug gaat een onderdeel uit een schilderij gemaakt in 1813.
Ook het karakter van de “discoverer” heeft een veelvoud van tijdsbeelden meegekregen, benaderd in de vorm van ondermeer arrogantie, gratie, trots, verlegenheid, naïviteit, intelligentie. Dat je dat allemaal in je hebt, is ook een vorm van barok.
Het schilderij leeft zowel in het verleden als in het heden.
Dit schilderij was voor mijzelf ook een ontdekkingsreis in de wijze waarop ik het licht heb benaderd. Ook daarin heb ik de barok doorgevoerd.
Ik geniet van ieder detail in dit werk. En het feit dat al deze details samen een ontdekkingsreiziger laten zien, brengt me weer terug bij het leven van nu wat je ook een vorm van barok kunt noemen als je naar het leven om je heen kijkt”.
